The State is to receive €2.9 million from the new EU school fruit, veg and milk scheme.

The scheme will include the distribution of milk, vegetables and fruit to schools around the country between this week and the end of the school terms next Summer.

Ruth Deasy is spokesperson for the EU Commission.

She says the scheme is a win-win in the battle to promote healthy eating while tackling the growing problem of obesity among children.

The European Movement in Ireland is calling on all primary schools in the country to enter the 2018 Blue Star Programme.

The competition is an education initiative to foster better understanding and knowledge of Europe and how the EU affects the lives of citizens among Irish primary pupils through classroom projects and activities.

Schools can register via the European Movement Ireland website.
