Ireland has the 8th worst coastal bathing water quality in the European Union.

New figures from the European Environmental Authority provided to Eurostat reveal that Ireland is in the same category as Poland, Romania, Estonia and Bulgaria when it comes to the quality of coastal bathing water.

Slovenia and Malta top the list of 28 EU member States with 100 per cent of their beaches receiving an excellent rating.

Grace Bolton of the European Commission office in Dublin says we rank poorly compared to certain Mediterranean countries.
