Ireland recorded the highest natural rise in population in the European Union in 2018 bringing the total population here to 4.83 million.

New figures from Eurostat show that the population increased by 15.2 people per 1,000 residents.

Although Malta and Luxembourg recorded slightly higher increases due mainly to immigration, the natural rise was highest in Ireland.

Grace Bolton of the European Commission Representation in Dublin, says the figures show that more births than deaths are occurring here annually.
