The European Commission will begin talks today on reforming its migration policy.

The proposed Migration Pact will focus on returning economic migrants, strengthening EU external borders and encouraging safer passage to Europe for refugees needing protection.

Ireland has the right to opt out of EU migration policy – a position confirmed when voters here endorsed the Lisbon Treaty in 2009.

Gerry Kiely, Head of EU Representation in Ireland, says despite the Irish right to opt-out, the Government here has voluntarily agreed to participate in the EU relocation and resettlement schemes.
