The European Commission is to tighten up its customs arrangements to help improve trade.

Under a new Action Plan, EU member States will enforce greater compliance on the importation of goods from countries outside the European Union.

Tighter controls will also be applied in the e-commerce area to address tax evasion and fraud.

Gerry Kiely, Head of EU Representation in Ireland, says the measures are aimed at preventing revenue losses which run into billions of Euro.
