The European Consumer Centre in Ireland is warning people to be careful when buying from spurious websites that carry a Dot ie address.

It says a growing number of scam sites from outside the European Union are using Dot ie as a domain name and misleading consumers.

The Centre is advising people to check the address and office phone number of the site before making a purchase.

Cyril Sullivan of ECC Ireland says consumers are unlikely to get refunds from these scam sites where difficulties arise.
