Housing costs in Ireland, which include water, electricity, gas and other fuels, are now the highest in Europe at 77% above the EU average.

New figures from Eurostat for 2019 reveal that 69% of Irish people own their own home.

This is the 7th lowest rate in the European Union and slightly below the EU average of 70 per cent.

Tim Hayes of the EU Commission office in Dublin says the figures show that more people here live in houses than apartments.
