The European Consumer Centre in Dublin is advising the Irish public to do their homework before purchasing items online from the UK.

The Centre says it has received over 400 complaints since January 1st about hidden costs such as tax and customs duties.

It says matters are compounded by the fact that now the UK is outside the EU, refunds cannot always be guaranteed.

Doctor Cyril Sullivan of ECC Ireland says consumers should check the new rules on UK-based sites before making online payments.
