The average age at which a new mum in Ireland gives birth is now 30.7 years, according to new figures from Eurostat.

This is the fourth highest average age in the EU after Italy, Spain and Luxembourg.

The trend is reflected in every country in Europe, where the average age for giving birth to a first child is now 29.4 years.

Tim Hayes of the European Commission says later births here reflect a changing Irish society.
