The rate of inflation in Ireland rose sharply in April compared to the previous 12 months but is still one of the lowest in the EU.

New figures from Eurostat show that inflation here last month rose to 1% from just 0.1% in March making it the fifth lowest in Europe.

For the 10 months before March, the rate in Ireland had been under zero per cent.

Tim Hayes of the European Commission office in Ireland says energy and food costs have contributed significantly to the increase.
